♪♪♪ -Welcome to "Classical Tahoe."
My name is Jake Heggie, and I'm delighted to share some concerts we performed recently in one of the most spectacular settings in America.
Today's program features music by William Grant Still, Max Bruch, and Antonin Dvorák.
-"Classical Tahoe" is a magical combination of wonderful music and fantastic people in a ridiculously beautiful location.
-Since the first time here, like, I fell in love with the space, obviously, with its people, and with the whole mood of the festival, which is really relaxed but also very serious in the music making.
-There's a lot of camaraderie between the musicians.
It's a good combination of high-level music making and enjoyment of the outdoors.
-I have had the most wonderful time.
The entirety of Lake Tahoe, both in Nevada and in California, the surrounding mountains, this ocean in the mountains -- it's just unbelievable.
-What we're trying to do is keep our intimate experience but be able to broadcast it so that people can have a front-row seat to both this beautiful place and this kind of quality musical experience.
-The pavilion is all lit up like a fairyland.
-It's magical.
It's one of a kind.
-It's like a block party.
Everybody knows each other in the audience.
And over the course of time, they've gotten to know us.
-After every performance, somebody always comes to me and introduces themselves.
-They're so personal and enthusiastic.
-We've made this community together, so that makes it like family here.
-We also have William Grant Still's "Ennanga," which is for harp, strings, and piano.
-And I had no idea he had composed a concerto-style piece for harp.
The title "Ennanga" is actually the name of an African harp.
Not really the shape of the classical harp, but it's like a bow, basically, and it has very few strings, around 14, something like this.
So, the title is based on that.
And then, in the music itself, you have like colors of Negro spirituals.
At the same time, he uses the harp in a very percussive way.
It's very strong, which I love.
Like it's not always like, you know, kind, gentle and soft.
It also explores other aspects of the instrument, and it's a very lively piece.
Not very long, but I had a lot of fun learning it, and I'm really excited to perform it for the first time here in "Classical Tahoe."

The string parts are very beautiful and lush, and I love playing it because I'm playing low all the time.
I almost feel like a bass player.
But the first violinist has a really virtuosic part, and it's just a real pleasure to play.

-That old chestnut, Dvorák.
The symphony is just one of the greatest pieces ever written.
I just think it's continuous sort of poem that's written out.
Hear all these influences -- Wagner, Schubert, Brahms.
I also hear a little bit of Mahler, especially in the fourth movement.
♪♪♪ "New World Symphony" is a postcard from United States, but also a postcard of Europe from United States, if that makes any sense, because all of those genres and all of those different influences are very evident in the symphony.
-In the second movement, so beautiful, the English horn solo.
It's probably the best-known melody in the symphony.
In fact, our English horn player played it exquisitely, if I may say so.
-The solo is really an English horn feature, which is great.
There's string accompaniment, muted strings, so it's very soft and serene, and the English horn is supposed to just kind of emerge out of nowhere and happens several times throughout the movement.
♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ In the middle of the solo, I'm joined by the clarinets.
Dan Gilbert's playing principal clarinet.
He has a beautiful countermelody to the solo, and then, playing principal bassoon, Whitney Crockett joins, who adds some much needed weight to the height of the solo.
